The Classroom

A small story created in my sketchbook, based on a series of live-sketching sessions that took place in my daughter’s early childhood classroom. It’s been two years since I made this little book, but it’s circling my mind, repeatedly, as I prepare for my youngest to begin daycare today.

The reasons behind when each child began daycare are very different, and the feelings I carry for each are, too. What remains the same is that there are no little feet at home while I write these words—and I find myself drawing small toes just to see them again.

Through this book, I explored how to capture fleeting movement—and emotion—with quick, stream-of-conscious shapes and linework. Later in my studio, I came back to the drawings to add wash and detail.

The final book was created with paper-over-cardboard covers and hand-sewn with wax thread and a button closure.
